INTRODUCTION

The English Language Center (ELC) was established in 1981, and the courses it offered to all the students of the university, till May, 2022 were:
-- Functional English Course
-- ESP
-- Business Communication

The Center was upgraded in June, 2022 to Department of Linguistics and Philology.
It houses a well-equipped Seminar Library and Self Access Center (SAC) for online access to all courses.
It offers a flavor of a number of myriad resources to its valued students, including a variety of books on Language, Literature and Linguistics, Audio-video Aids, research journals and theses.
The faculty is highly qualified, experienced and tech-savvy. Most of them are Ph.Ds. from abroad.
The department focusses on the scientific study of the language in all aspects. The main goal of English linguistics, like all other intellectual disciplines, is to increase our knowledge and understanding of the world. It has a strong emphasis on linguistics theories as well as on field work and experimental studies.
Since language is universal and fundamental to all human interactions, the knowledge attained in linguistics has many practical applications. The major sub-fields of Linguistics include:
Phonetics: the study of speech sounds
Phonology: the study of language sound system
Morphology: the study of word structure
Syntax: the study of how linguistic units larger than the word are constructed
Semantics: the study of meaning
Historical linguistics: the study of language change over time
Sociolinguistics: the study of how language is used in society
Psycholinguistics: the study of how language is processed in mind
Neurolinguistics: the study of the actual encoding of language in the brain
Computational linguistics: learning and understanding a language involves computing the properties of that language that are described in its phonology, syntax and semantics.
